Class Descriptions

Ages 3-4
Introduction to Dance - 3/4 hour weekly

Recital: Ballet OR tap
The main goal of these classes is to maintain a happy, fun-loving atmosphere, to introduce a love for dance to each child. We encourage sharing, helping each other, getting along, listening and following directions. Some basic ballet, patterns and tumbling skills are incorporated. In January, we introduce the children at the Intro 1 level to tap. Students at the Intro 2 level will have tap all year. We strive for an environment that fosters creativity and expression through movement while developing coordination.

Ages 5-6
Basic Dance- 1 hour weekly
Recital: Ballet and Tap

Optional Classes:  Irish Step

In Basic Dance, we learn the “basics of dance” and class etiquette in a gentle and nurturing manner. Children learn correct body alignment, body positions, terminology and proper ballet technique. They will work on rhythms and musicality in the tap segment of class. We place more emphasis on listening skills and getting along with others while having fun. We also include some basic tumbling to help with strength and flexibility. These students will also experience the ever so popular “Jazz Dance” for the first time.

Ages 6-8 Fundamentals of Dance :  1 1/2 hours weekly

recital:  2 dances, ballet and either tap or jazz

Optional Classes:  Hip-Hop, Irish Step

At this stage we begin to formalize the young dancers’ training, concentrating on proper technique, terminology, rhythm, coordination, strength, flexibility and teamwork. Though we do expect a certain level of respect and discipline, we also believe that an enjoyable environment is one that is conducive to learning. At this level, class consists of ballet, tap and jazz, and students will perform Jazz in the recital for the first time. Something that most of them look forward to.

Ages 7-9 Intermediate 1 :  1 1/2 hours weekly
Recital: Ballet, Tap and Jazz

 Ages 9-11 Intermediate 2: 2 hrs. weekly

Recital: ballet, tap, and jazz

Optional Classes: Modern, Hip Hop, Irish Step, Kids Club (by invitation)

At the Intermediate  level, we expect more from the dancer. The students are encouraged to study ballet, tap and jazz to make for a well-rounded program of dance. It is here that we fine-tune the dancers before they move on to the next division. We try to challenge the dancer more at this level and teach them how to help themselves learn better. At this point, we also expect that students respect each other and their teachers as well as themselves and the art of dance.

Juniors ages (10-12) 2.25hours weekly
Recital: Ballet, Tap, Jazz

Optional Classes: Modern, Hip Hop, Irish Step, Junior competitive team (by invitation only, or try-outs for new students)

The Junior  Class is designed to prepare the student for the Senior Division. Once the dancer has entered the Junior Division, we expect the student to strive to be the best he/she can be, always giving 100%. We expect that students know how to take class properly.  Students will concentrate on strength, control, flexibility and expression in different styles of dance.

As there are more options for dancers at this level, they may now pick and choose the classes they wish to take. Though we strongly encourage that they continue with ballet as it is the foundation of all dance It is highly recommended that these students take advantage of our “Excell Program”, designed to make it more affordable for students to take multiple classes and try many different styles. The “Excell Program” affords us the opportunity to work with you and the student to customize the dance curriculum, so as to best fit the dancers’ needs and desires. Attendance is an important aspect of the dancers’ training and should not be taken lightly.

Pointe

Students must be approved for this class. All Pointe students must take a regular ballet class.

Modern

Modern is a classical form of dance that both Alvin Ailey and Martha Graham pioneered. In this class, students will work to develop strength, control and balance as well as interpretation. This program is intended for the dedicated student who wishes to broaden her experiences in different forms of dance, but can also be enjoyed by the student who just wishes to gain self esteem.

Hip-Hop

In this class students will learn the most popular style of dance today. We try to incorporate some of the most popular music in class and some of the M-TV dance moves, provided we feel that it is age appropriate. We also try to keep a relaxed and fun-filled environment, while maintaining proper training.

Lyric

Lyric is an interpretive style of dance, intended for our excel students, who will learn to portray the story or feeling of the song through body movements, emotions and expression. This class must be taken in addition to a Ballet, Modern or Jazz class.

Irish Step

The Irish Step Program is available for students ages 4 and up. This program teaches traditional Irish Step moves while providing students with the opportunity to explore the Irish Heritage. Rose McKenna is well known in the Irish Step communtity and has trained many world class dancers.

Kids Club & Competition Team

The Kids Club and CompetitionTeam are designed for the students who enjoy performing. Eligibility for kids club and competition team is at the discretion of the teacher. Students spend the year preparing for competition. We usually only attend one of these. Students also put together a short show t perform at different elderly facilities in the area. The performances will take place  Saturdays.  In the past, the performers, as well as the elderly viewers had a wonderful time. This is a team effort and all who participate must be at all classes and performances. Students will also perform one of these numbers in the Spring Concert. Students must be enrolled in a regular program (minimum of 1 3/4 hours for kids club, and 3 3/4 hours for Junior and Senior competition teams) in order to participate in either the Kids Club or Competition Team.

Boys Only Hip-Hop/Tap

"Boys Only" is an enthusiastic class for the boy who expresses an interest in dance, but is concerned with being the only boy in a class of girls. We do our best to maintain a "Guy Friendly" style of dance by incorporating some of the latest pop songs and MTV artists. so boys, don't worry, there's no girly stuff in this class. Also available...Boys Tap!
